The kiosks have been fitted in 16 London boroughs for a 12-month trial

The Metropolitan Police has implemented a system to extract mobile phone data from suspects held in custody.

The data includes call history, texts and contacts, and the BBC has learned that it will be retained regardless of whether any charges are brought.

The technology is being used in 16 London boroughs, and could potentially be used by police across the UK.

Campaign group Privacy International described the move as a "possible breach of human rights law".

Until now, officers had to send mobiles off for forensic examination in order to gather and store data, a process which took several weeks.

Under the new system, content will be extracted using purpose built terminals in police stations.
It will allow officers to connect a suspect's mobile and produce a print out of data from the device, as well as saving digital records of the content.


'Retained and handled'

A Met Police spokesman told the BBC that when a suspect was released, "data received from the handsets is retained and handled in accordance with other data held by the MPS [Metropolitan Police Service]" - regardless of whether charges had been brought.

Guidelines given to officers state that data extraction can happen only if there is sufficient suspicion the mobile phone was used for criminal activity.

Unofficial APIs are the new fruit of temptation

Microsoft has urged developers to only use approved Windows 8 software interfaces to avoid spoiling the launch of its new operating system with dodgy code

In a stark warning this week, the company said third-party programmers should “resist the temptation” of invoking APIs that aren’t included in the official Software Development Kit (SDK) for the new Metro user interface.

Developers who flout this rule are in “violation of customer expectations and [Windows] Store policy”, the software giant said in a blog post titled “delivering reliable and trustworthy Metro-style apps”.

Using unofficial APIs, Microsoft said, is likely to “ultimately undermine the expectations that customers have for your app” if it crashes or plays up as a result.

John Hazen, a programme manager for the Windows 8 developer experience team, blogged here:


APIs that are outside the SDK are not guaranteed to work with Metro style apps either in this release or in future releases, so you may find that your app doesn’t function properly for all customers.
These APIs may also not function properly in the async environment that is foundational to Metro style app design. Finally these APIs may undermine customer confidence by accessing resources or data that Metro style apps would not normally interact with.

The advisory is a standard one from any operating system developer; technophobic punters often blame the OS maker when a program crashes because some smart arse cut corners, used unofficial APIs or tried an unapproved technique.

However the warning comes hot on the heels of Redmond locking down Windows 8 on ARM (Windows RT) to ensure handheld devices can't be jail broken to run homebrew and unapproved software. The company is keeping the mobile platform so closed, it’s denying access to rival Mozilla which had been porting Firefox to Windows 8.

Microsoft has created plenty of confusion between Windows 8 for ARM and Windows 8 for everything else; its Metro interface for phone and PC use completely different runtimes and frameworks, and they have different online software shops - Windows Store for Windows 8 and Windows Marketplace for the phone.

It would seem Microsoft is trying to keep these two worlds separate, and prevent an app built for the phone finding its way on to the PC, encountering not just technical problems but also ruining some careful market segmentation by Microsoft based on device type and software.

Reg contributor Tim Anderson pointed out that the greater danger Microsoft faces is the likelihood that coders will try to play fast and loose on Windows 8 for PCs rather than Windows RT.

It comes back to what we've said before on Windows 8: just like the first Windows Phone, Microsoft is keeping the ARM platform closed to third parties, whose apps could cause application crashes and ruin the consumer launch.

Click fraudsters are milking you for cash

Surfers who see ads when they visit Wikipedia are likely infected with malware, the online encyclopedia warns.

Wikipedia relies on donations to fund its work, resisting the temptation to put ads on its pages. So internet users who see commercial ads when they visit the encyclopedia are been served content via cybercrime affiliates, a blog post by Wikipedia explains

We never run ads on Wikipedia. Wikipedia is funded by more than a million donors, who give an average donation of less than 30 dollars. We run fundraising appeals, usually at the end of the year.

If you're seeing advertisements for a for-profit industry (see screenshot for an example) or anything but our fundraiser, then your web browser has likely been infected with malware.


Wikipedia doesn't warn over any specific malware but rather about the symptoms of click fraud, one of they more common ways that virus writers turn an illicit profit. The approach was used as the business model behind the infamous Flashback Trojan, which notoriously created a huge botnet on Mac machines until Apple belatedly patched the Java vulnerability that the malware had exploited. Cupertino released a clean-up tool earlier this week.

An updated analysis by Symantec, published on Wednesday, reveals that over a three-week period in April, the botnet displayed over 10 million ads on compromised computers.

"Approximately 400,000 of those ads were clicked on, which would have netted the attackers $14,000 if they were able to collect it," an anonymous Symantec researcher explains. "Many PPC providers employ anti-fraud measures and affiliate-verification processes before paying. Fortunately, the attackers in this instance appear to have been unable to complete the necessary steps to be paid.

"It is estimated the actual ad-clicking component of Flashback was only installed on about 10,000 of the more than 600,000 infected machines. In other words, utilising less than 2 per cent of the entire botnet the attackers were able to generate $14,000 in three weeks, meaning that if the attackers were able to use the entire botnet, they could potentially have earned millions of dollars a year," Symantec adds.

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have confirmed Kenny Dalglish has been sacked as the club's manager.




However, his contract was terminated on Wednesday evening following "a careful and deliberate review of the season" which led the owners to conclude "that a change was appropriate".

Principal owner John Henry said: "Kenny will always be more than a championship winning manager, more than a championship winning star player. He is in many ways the heart and soul of the club. He personifies everything that is good about Liverpool Football Club. He has always put the club and its supporters first. Kenny will always be a part of the family at Anfield.

"Our job now is to identify and recruit the right person to take this club forward and build on the strong foundations put in place during the last 18 months."

Dalglish won the Carling Cup to secure a trophy in his first full season back in charge at Anfield but the club finished a disappointing eighth in the Premier League and lost the FA Cup final to Chelsea.

The manager was also severely criticised for his handling of the incident that saw Luis Suarez banned for eight games for racially abusing Patrice Evra.

Chairman Tom Werner said: "Kenny came into the club as manager at our request at a time when Liverpool Football Club really needed him. He didn't ask to be manager; he was asked to assume the role. He did so because he knew the club needed him. He did more than anyone else to stabilise Liverpool over the past year-and-a-half and to get us once again looking forward. We owe him a great debt of gratitude.

"However, results in the Premier League have been disappointing and we believe to build on the progress that has already been made, we need to make a change.

"We are committed to delivering success for our supporters and our ambition remains resolute to return this great club to the elite of England and Europe, where it belongs."

Dalglish's departure is just the latest in a long line of recent changes to the Anfield power structure.

Director of football Damien Comolli, director of communications Ian Cotton and head of sports medicine and sports science Peter Brukner have all been recent casualties.

Dalglish is one of Liverpool's greatest ever players and during his first spell as a manager won three league titles and two FA Cups before stepping down in February 1991.

He returned as manager when replacing Roy Hodgson in January 2011.

"It has been an honour and a privilege to have had the chance to come back to Liverpool Football Club as manager," he said. "I greatly appreciate the work that Steve (Clarke), Kevin (Keen), the players and all of the staff put in during my time and feel proud that we delivered the club's first trophy in six years winning the Carling Cup and came close to a second trophy in the FA Cup final.

"Of course I am disappointed with results in the league, but I would not have swapped the Carling Cup win for anything as I know how much it meant to our fans and the club to be back winning trophies.

"Whilst I am obviously disappointed to be leaving the football club, I can say that the matter has been handled by the owners and all concerned in an honourable, respectful and dignified way and reflects on the quality of the people involved and their continued desire to move the football club forward in the same way as when they arrived here.

"I would like to thank all of the staff at the club for their effort and loyalty. I said when first approached about coming back as manager that I would always be of help if I can at any time and that offer remains the same.

"Finally, I want to put on record my heartfelt gratitude to Liverpool's fans, who have always given me and the club their unwavering support. Without them neither the club nor I would have achieved anything."
